School Service Movie (Cinemalaya 2018)




School Service Movie stars Ai-Ai de las Alas as a leader of a syndicate involving kidnapping young children and turning them into street beggars. Produced by BG Productions International Ignacio Films and directed by Louie Ignacio, this Pinoy indie drama film won 3 major awards at the 2018 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, including Best Supporting Actress for Therese Malvar and Best Actress for Ai-Ai de las Alas.

School Service Movie Plot Summary

The start of the movie shows a young girl Maya (Celine Juan) walking in the street in her province when a school service stops beside her and offers her to bring her home. Without her knowledge, she was abducted by a syndicate led by Nanay Rita (Ai Ai delas Alas), and was brought to Manila. There, Maya learned that Nanay Rita is making up stories so she can easily beg money from people in the streets.

Maya also learned that there are other young children like her that Nanay Rita has been using to beg. As a subplot, Nanay Rita has a sickly father (Joe Gruta), a gay brother Roberto (Joel Lamangan), who had conflicts with his lover Kiko (Kevin Sagra). Aside from child kidnapping, the movie featured other problems in the city such as corrupt cops, street children using solvent, and prostitution involving young girls.
